Professional dry wall contractors make each project look ridiculously easy, doing everything quickly and efficiently, but it’s not quite as easy as it looks. Below are the steps to flawless drywall installation:

Step 1 – Mix the Drywall Mud

Drywall mud has to be perfectly smooth before it’s installed. Instead of trying to mix it by hand, use a professional mixer or a power tool to stir it until all the lumps are gone. If you don’t feel like starting from scratch, you can go to any local hardware store, such as Home Depot, and buy a barrel of premixed drywall mud.

Step 2 – Fill Large Joint Gaps with Putty

Before taping the drywall, fill all wide joint gaps with putty. Insert the putty, push it in all the way so it fills all the openings, then clean off any extra putty to smooth out the top layer. After wiping away the putty, let the joints dry for a full day before attempting further steps.

Step 3Add the Drywall Tape

Start with the vertical lines and tape downward in thin strips. You can use a ruler to keep the tape in a straight path so it doesn’t overlap. Afterwards, start the horizontal lines. Don’t allow any of the tape to double up because it may leave bumps.

Step 4 – Apply a Thin Coat of Mud

Next, apply a thin coat of drywall mud. If it’s too thick, it will be very difficult to make it even. Apply one coat, let it dry, then apply a second. Apply at least 4 coats. On the last coating, feather the edge where it meets the wall to ensure that the overall appearance is one continuous unit.

Step 5 – Cover the House

Once the coatings of drywall mud have dried, it’s time to cover up everything prior to sanding. Cover all of the furniture, floors, and anything else that can be damaged with plastic. There’s nothing worse than drywall dust flying everywhere when it’s being sanded.

Step 6 – Sand the Drywall

After you’ve covered the room with plastic, begin sanding. Move slowly and use fine sand paper to ensure you don’t overdo it. Every few minutes, take a step back and look at the wall as a whole to analyze the work.

Do you run a restaurant business? Cleaning and managing the restaurant kitchen is a day-to-day affair that most restaurant businesses have to go through on a daily basis. Towards ensuring maximum profits, it should come as no surprise that the primary focus of the commercial kitchens is to optimize the overall profits with minimal efforts. If the restaurant kitchen in your business is giving away, then it is high time that you should consider remodeling the commercial kitchen for optimizing the overall profits.

One of the primary reasons of the commercial kitchens adopting remodeling is to enhance the overall energy efficiency. The United States Department of Energy conducted studies on both the Full Service Restaurants as well as the Quick Service Restaurants across some of the major cities towards analyzing & assessing the energy usage. It was revealed that an average restaurant consumed around five to seven times more energy than the commercial counterparts.

With an eye on the overall cost reduction and optimizing the profit margins, here are some of the remodeling ideas for the commercial kitchens out there:

  • Consider replacing all the cooking appliances for enhancing the overall energy efficiency. Upgrading the conventional ovens, fryers, broilers, griddles, and others can help in saving thousands of dollars annually on the entire energy bills. You can also consider installing gas alternatives by switching to eco-friendly options of the cooking gas.

  • Aim at improving the overall HVAC efficiency. Cooling and heating costs can make up for around 30 percent of the overall energy requirements of any restaurant. In addition to replacing the old equipment for HVAC units, bringing about improvements in the overall insulation, air sealing, and installation of the cool roof are some of the important measures that you can consider taking for ensuring long-term savings.

  • Most of the times, we tend to ignore the restaurant kitchen floor during its overall maintenance. However, it serves to be a vital component of the back-house operations. You must consider the installation of proper, clean kitchen flooring that is able to withstand the heavy traffic in the commercial kitchen spaces.

  • During the remodeling project of any commercial kitchen, the replacement of the utensils, glassware, kitchenware, and others must also follow suit. Once the kitchen renovation project is complete, you can consider including some aesthetic essentials for enhanced results.

For many homes, the carpet is the first thing you notice when you walk in.  Although it’s mostly subconscious, you pick up on things like its color, placement, and cleanliness.  If you’ve got poor carpeting, it degrades the quality and appearance of the room.  In today’s post, we’ve asked the experts at Irving TX Carpet Cleaning to explain the steps for proper carpet installation.  If you have trouble with the DIY method and don’t want to install the carpeting yourself, you may visit their website at to schedule an appointment.

Step 1 – Determine the Room Size

Measure each wall of your room and mark it down on a piece of paper.  Keep in mind that you should add an extra inch to each measurement to account for any pattern issues with the carpeting.

Step 2 – Remove the Old Carpet & Clean the Floor

If you’re starting your carpet installation from scratch, ignore this step.  Otherwise, rip out the old carpet by tearing out all nails, staples and glue.  If you need to, use the back-end of a hammer to pry up anything that’s stuck.  After removing the carpet, clean any remaining residue and glue from the floor.

Step 3 – Remove the Doors

Once the floor is clean, remove all the doors that open into the room.  You want them out of the way so you can focus on laying the carpet to the edges of the walls.

Step 4 – Install Tackless Strips

Now, grab the tackless strips and cut them to the correct size.  Line the strips less than an inch from the wall, but do not put any near the doorways.  Stores like Home Depot sell special adhesive you can use to hold the tackless strips in place.

Step 5 – Lay the Carpet Pad & Trim It

Lay the carpet pad 180 degrees from the direction of your carpeting and adhere it to the tackless strips using staples or glue.  Then, trim it to the right size so it fits snug against the walls.

Step 6 – Cut the Carpet to Size & Lay It Down

Bring the new carpet outside and cut each piece to the correct size.  After cutting it, return inside with the carpeting and lay it down over the carpet pad.  Remove any excess material, but ensure you leave extra near any walls just in case.  It’s easiest to use a carpet knife to perform all the necessary trimming; it’ll allow you to more easily maneuver around edges.

Step 7 – Attach the Carpet to the Tackles Strips

When the above step is complete, place the carpet over the tackless strips and hit it together.  A forceful strike a few inches from the wall will attach the carpet to the strips so it doesn’t move.  Then, grab a wall trimmer and slowly slide it along the carpet edge to cut away the excess near the walls.

Step 8 – Prep Vent Openings

Cut away any carpeting near air ducts and vents.

Step 9 – Reinstall Doors

Put the doors back on and celebrate your new carpet!

We hope you enjoyed the tips for proper carpet installation.  You can use these steps to do it yourself, or you can hire a professional to do it for you.  Also, feel free to view our selection of carpeting materials.  Please let us know if you have any questions or feedback.

The kitchen is an important part of every home because it’s the place where people spend their time.  Think about the last time you were there.  You cook, meal prep, eat, spend time with your family, and even host guests and socialize in the kitchen.  We want to ensure this common area remains the place that makes a house a home.  Below are 4 tips to remodel your kitchen.

Choose a Kitchen Layout

Surprisingly, choosing a layout for your kitchen is one of the most difficult things to do prior to remodeling.  The amount of options available to remodel your kitchen can be overwhelming.  Start with observation.  Any time you walk into someone’s home, take note of the kitchen’s design and what aspects you like.  Not everything will be appealing to you, but there may be some elements you’d like to use for your own kitchen.  We also recommend watching some TV to gather ideas.  Shows like Flip or Flop, First Time Addict, and almost everything on HGTV deals with home remodeling, so the kitchen renovations are often a focal point.  As you collect ideas, write down a list of the elements you’d like to have and rank them in order of importance.

Pick the Right Island

The island is a key piece of the kitchen design.  There are many different kitchen islands to choose from: portable, table, standing, and fully functional.  Portable islands have wheels, allowing them to move.  This is a less expensive option and gives you maximum flexibility with space, if you need it.  Using a table creates a less formal design, allowing people to sit close to where the food is prepared.  Standing islands are the most common.  These islands are planted in one place and do not move.  They’re typically used for storage of cooking elements, pots, and pans.  If you choose this type, you’ll also need to choose a counter-top; limestone, granite, and slate are all great options.  The last kind of island is fully functional.  This island has one more heating elements, such as a built in stove or top-side burners.  Choose a fully functional island if you plan on cooking often or in bulk.

Search for Recommended Contractors

Once you’ve got a healthy list of kitchen designs elements and your ideal island, look for a local contractor that you can trust.  If kitchen remodeling companies or contractors have done this type of work before, they’re sure to have a previous client or two who would recommend them.  Use sites like Angie’s List, Houzz, Yelp, or even a quick Google search to find a local remodeler.  Be sure to check their business rating and read through the reviews to get a feel for their level of experience and quality of their work.  If you know homeowners in the local area, ask them if they have someone they can recommend.  You want to hire a kitchen remodeler with some form of 3rd party validation, to avoid major problems down the road.

Ask for Sample Kitchen Design Layouts & Get Quotes

Once you’ve identified some potential kitchen remodeling companies to work with, contact each of them.  Ask for samples of their kitchen design work and a potential layout for your home, based on the list of elements you made.  If you’ve done a good job identifying trusted contractors, the range of pricing for your ideal kitchen should be relatively small.  Then, it comes down to a gut decision.  After speaking with the various contractors, which do you believe best understands your needs?  That person is the one to go with because they’ll work with you to help you create something enviable.
