For many homes, the carpet is the first thing you notice when you walk in.  Although it’s mostly subconscious, you pick up on things like its color, placement, and cleanliness.  If you’ve got poor carpeting, it degrades the quality and appearance of the room.  In today’s post, we’ve asked the experts at Irving TX Carpet Cleaning to explain the steps for proper carpet installation.  If you have trouble with the DIY method and don’t want to install the carpeting yourself, you may visit their website at to schedule an appointment.

Step 1 – Determine the Room Size

Measure each wall of your room and mark it down on a piece of paper.  Keep in mind that you should add an extra inch to each measurement to account for any pattern issues with the carpeting.

Step 2 – Remove the Old Carpet & Clean the Floor

If you’re starting your carpet installation from scratch, ignore this step.  Otherwise, rip out the old carpet by tearing out all nails, staples and glue.  If you need to, use the back-end of a hammer to pry up anything that’s stuck.  After removing the carpet, clean any remaining residue and glue from the floor.

Step 3 – Remove the Doors

Once the floor is clean, remove all the doors that open into the room.  You want them out of the way so you can focus on laying the carpet to the edges of the walls.

Step 4 – Install Tackless Strips

Now, grab the tackless strips and cut them to the correct size.  Line the strips less than an inch from the wall, but do not put any near the doorways.  Stores like Home Depot sell special adhesive you can use to hold the tackless strips in place.

Step 5 – Lay the Carpet Pad & Trim It

Lay the carpet pad 180 degrees from the direction of your carpeting and adhere it to the tackless strips using staples or glue.  Then, trim it to the right size so it fits snug against the walls.

Step 6 – Cut the Carpet to Size & Lay It Down

Bring the new carpet outside and cut each piece to the correct size.  After cutting it, return inside with the carpeting and lay it down over the carpet pad.  Remove any excess material, but ensure you leave extra near any walls just in case.  It’s easiest to use a carpet knife to perform all the necessary trimming; it’ll allow you to more easily maneuver around edges.

Step 7 – Attach the Carpet to the Tackles Strips

When the above step is complete, place the carpet over the tackless strips and hit it together.  A forceful strike a few inches from the wall will attach the carpet to the strips so it doesn’t move.  Then, grab a wall trimmer and slowly slide it along the carpet edge to cut away the excess near the walls.

Step 8 – Prep Vent Openings

Cut away any carpeting near air ducts and vents.

Step 9 – Reinstall Doors

Put the doors back on and celebrate your new carpet!
